Last week the world digerati had a conniption as Twitter really started tightening the screws to developers. I think it’s too bad that Twitter is taking the path of greater inclusion of ads and generally screwing the developers. However, at the same time, it’s their service that they are providing to most people for free, so I can’t fault them for that. What they’ve done, though, is start alienating developers that have helped them grow their business. There are others that will argue that point better than me, but it’s true.
I think there could have been a way to allow for developers to attach to the APIs but with either:
- Cost to the developer. Could keep it relatively low. Maybe per active user per month or similar
- Require developers to make good faith effort to incorporate the ads or special tweets that would allow Twitter to monetize. If you, as a developer, do not do that, we shut you off.
But, and here’s the rub as I see it, that moves Twitter to a service, and I don’t think they want that. They want to a brand, a destination, a competitor to Facebook. That’s disappointing.
Out of the ashes of this comes a number of attempts to create another “Twitter-like” option. App.net appears to be one, but I predict if it survives, it will have to go more towards the Twitter model.
Then there’s services like tent.io, a federated “twitter-like” experience. Dan Wineman at Venomous Porridge has a great writeup of some of the issues. His analysis is interesting in that it lists a set of constraints for any service.
- Immediacy: if a post has been made by someone I follow, I can see it in my timeline right away (or close enough that I don’t notice the difference).
- Chronology: posts always appear in order by time posted.
- Monotonicity: timelines grow only from the top; older posts are never retroactively inserted.
He points out that you can get any two of those without a central service. He’s exactly right.
But another concern is spam. A lot of people have pointed out that the tent.io api has some similarities to SMTP and NNTP which give it a lot of robustness, no fail whales! But the downside to that is an abundance of spam. Netnews got filthy with it and most people have moved away from it. I don’t see any solution here that’s going to prevent that.
There may be swarm algorithms that could help with the spam problem (and there will be one) but it’s not in there and I think it would be hard to implement well.
But I wish tent.io well, I really do. I want them to succeed so that spam actually is a problem.
